31 | Ahaziah (Jehoahaz) | Judah | Reign | 1 | 2 Ki 8:25-26, 27, 28-29; 2 Ki 9:21-24, 27-28; 11:1-3; 1 Ch 3:11; 2 Ch 21:16-17; 22:1, 3-4, 5-7, 8-9, 10-12 | 12 | 27 | NN | 842 | 842 |
Ahaziah son of Jehoram had sole reign as king for less than a year. His mother was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. He accepted counsel from his mother and walked in the way of Ahab and did evil in the sight of the Lord. He allied with Joram the son of Ahab to war against Aram. Joram, king of Israel was wounded and returned to Jezreel and Ahaziah went to visit him because he was sick. Elisha the prophet had Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat anointed as king of Israel and eliminate the house of Ahab. Jehu assassinated Joram. When Ahaziah saw this he fled but was also slain as he fled. Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah destroyed all the royal offspring and ruled Judah. However, Joash (Jehoash) son of Ahaziah was hidden by Jehosheba, the daughter of Joram, sister of Ahaziah.

32 | Ahaziah (Jehoahaz) | Judah | Reign | 1 | 2 Chr 22:2 (KJV) | 40 | 20 | NN | 842 | 842 |
Most current translations of 2 Ch 22:2 read "Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king...". However, older versions of the Septuagint, the Syriac and the King James Version read "Forty and two years old...". Thinking this was a transcribing error by the chronicler it has been change to 22 to reconcile it with 2 Ki 8:26 and the fact that if he was 42 when he became king he would be 2 years older than his father. But the original account probably said “A son of forty and two years is Ahaziah in his reigning...”. The Chronicler arrived at the figure of 42 years by adding together the figures for Omri and each of the three kings following him: thus Omri had 6 years reign as sole king; Ahab had 22; Ahaziah had 2; and Joram had 12 years. The biblical writer apparently regarded Ahaziah’s period of rule as an extension of Omri’s dynasty and rule and not in the tradition of the Davidic kings.

"The accession-year system distinguished a king’s accession year (the incomplete calendar year in which he began to reign) and reckoned by the number of New Year days a king lived in his reign. In the nonaccession-year system the remainder of a previous king’s last year is counted as the first year of his successor, and then subsequent years are calculated from Nisan to Nisan in Israel, or Tishri to Tishri in Judah [ 2 ] ."
