While Ahaz was King of Judah for 16 years (2 Ki 16:1-2) his total reign was 20 years. He was coregent with his father Jotham for 4 years. This can be determined by the synchronization with the reign of Pekah king of Israel. He was 20 years old when his coregency started and thus was 40 when he died. While he was buried in Jerusalem he was not entombed with the kings because of his extreme idolatry. The king of Aram and Pekah besieged Ahaz but could not defeat him. Ahaz made an alliance and subjugated his kingdom to the king of Assyria to defeat Aram and capture Damascus. Ahaz went to Damascus to meet the king of Assyria and copied their pagan altar and set it up as equal to the altar of the Lord in the House of the Lord in Jerusalem. Eventually he closed the House of the Lord. Ahaz's son Hezekiah succeeded him as king. Isaiah prophesied to Ahaz about the fate of the Kingdom of Israel and Pekah and Aram. He also told Ahaz that if he did not believe he would not last. The Lord offered Ahaz the sign of a miracle of his choosing but Ahaz refused. Ahaz apparently introduced the sun dial to Jerusalem as mentioned in Isa 38:8.

"The accession-year system distinguished a king’s accession year (the incomplete calendar year in which he began to reign) and reckoned by the number of New Year days a king lived in his reign. In the nonaccession-year system the remainder of a previous king’s last year is counted as the first year of his successor, and then subsequent years are calculated from Nisan to Nisan in Israel, or Tishri to Tishri in Judah [ 2 ] ." (Note: Judah used Tishri, approximately September, and Israel used Nisan, approximately April, to mark the new year). BC From-BC date in years at beginning of event.
